Blades, 60, is best-known for his Panamanian salsa singing. He has also composed dozens of hits, including "Pedro Navaja," a ballad about a local thug. He wrote, and sings, what some Panamanians consider their second national anthem: "Patria" (Motherland). Much admired throughout Latin America, Blades ran for the Panamanian presidency in 1994. A decade later, he became that country's tourism minister; he took a leave of absence last summer to perform in a tour in Europe. Blades holds a law degree from Harvard and has appeared in dozens of feature films, including "The Milagro Beanfield War" in 1988.
