Silver Lake rustic, redefined
Rustic is redefined in ’70s hilltop home.
THIS house is on a Silver Lake knoll known by the locals as “Pill Hill” for the many prominent physicians who lived in the neighborhood between the 1930s and 1980s.
Even today, however, there are at least 50 doctors living in the area, according to George Mimnaugh, who just finished a major renovation there. Mimnaugh, a Grammy-nominated art director who designs CD packages, also restores homes.
Houses built on the hill were often designed by Modernist pioneers, although there is a mix of architectural styles, including Spanish Revival, contemporary and architectural homes.
This house’s original 1970 design looked like a classic alpine lodge, but since Mimnaugh restored it, the building has taken on a more refined appearance. Mimnaugh earlier restored another Silver Lake residence – a Case Study house designed by Rodney Walker.
About this house: It has a post-and-beam, three-story open plan and includes a den/media room on the second level and a guest suite and office on the first level, with a separate entrance.
The house is adjacent to the former hilltop estate of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson. There are views of Mt. Baldy, the Hollywood Hills and the distant ocean.
