Modern and airy seaside perch

Share

Angled steel beams, walls of glass and polished concrete floors create an intricate series of geometric shapes in a contemporary-style house that’s designed to follow the slope of the Malibu hillside it sits on.

The home is in Point Dume, known for its panoramic ocean views, and for being an enclave for celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Kenny G and Martin Sheen. It was designed by New Mexico architect Bart Prince.

The main entrance features a glass-walled terrarium, half of which sits inside the house. On the main level is a series of modules with an open-space living room, dining area, family room and study.

The kitchen, with maple flooring, features granite countertops and an island that serves as a work station and bar area. Customized, built-in appliances include a steamer, an espresso maker and a rotisserie. Adjacent to the kitchen is a butler’s pantry and laundry room.

At the rear of the house are a guest bedroom and guest bathroom, with a wine cellar downstairs. Off the main floor is a patio space with a built-in Viking barbecue for outdoor entertaining.

A catwalk spans the length of the house on the second floor, connecting the master suite, a study and a second guest bathroom. The master bathroom features a spa and two-person shower with a rain shower head and side jets. Iridescent, pearlized glass tiles were used in all the bathrooms.

There are two driveways, one on each side of the house. One leads to a guest suite, with a private entrance. The main driveway leads to a four-bay garage, equipped with a hydraulic lift to allow storage of two cars in the first bay.

The home, on more than an acre, has a terraced backyard and gardens with steps that switch back their way down the hillside to the beach.
