The kickoff event for the 2018 season of Padres Pedal the Cause took place Sept. 6 at the new Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion at UC San Diego. The event featured special guest Dr. Catriona Jamieson, deputy director of UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, who spoke on “The Cancer Stem Cell Initiative.”

Dr. Barbara Parker, senior deputy director of UCSD Moores Cancer Center, also spoke about her work with women and wellness.

Padres Pedal the Cause’s mission is to “provide funding for the finest collaborative research teams at Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health, the Salk Institute for Biological Studies , Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. It is our goal that research funded by Padres Pedal the Cause will lead to increased survivorship and ultimately, cures for cancer,” according to its website gopedal.org.

Pedal the Cause’s biggest fundraising event held in November, the annual two-day cycling challenge, brings together a community of cancer fighters, including survivors, families, children, doctors and researchers.
