A son, Wiley Teel Simmonds, was born to Julie and Raymond Simmonds of Boulder, Colo. at 10:34 p.m.January 21, 2012, at Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette, Colo. Wiley weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces and was 21 inches long at birth. Grandparents are Tom and Eunice Teel of Burt Lake, Jodi Teel of London, England, and Dr. Hank Simmonds and Sally Buehler of San Rafael, Calif.
A daughter, Paislee Maye Schlappi, was born to Shelia Mathers and Joseph Schlappi of Charlevoix Feb. 11, 2012, at Charlevoix Area Hospital. Paislee weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces and was 21 inches long at birth. Her siblings are Brynn Mathers, Johnny Schlappi and Jacob Schlappi. Grandparents are William Mathers of Flint, Cindy Mathers of Flint, and Barbara and Joseph Lemiur of Petoskey.
A son, Brody Joseph Neer, was born to Kelly and Jeremy Neer of Boyne City Feb. 10, 2012, at Charlevoix Area hospital. Brody weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces and was 21 1/2 inches long at birth. His siblings are Jack, 7, and Drew, 4. Grandparents are Julie and Joseph Flynn of Harbor Springs, Deb and Art Neer of Boyne City, and ClareVan Laan of Boyne City. Great-grandfathers are Jack VanLaan of Bay City, and Devere Middleton of Boyne City.

Hospice of Northwest Michigan is recruiting volunteers for the spring 2012 class. The 4-week session includes training in the roles of volunteers, orientation to Hospice philosophy, bereavement and grief, death and dying. An addional class on March 29 will train all interested volunteers in the special circumstances surrounding serving Hospice veterans. This session is optional. Upon completetion, the volunteer must undergo a criminal background check, including fingerprinting, pass a drug test, and commit to at least 4 hours a month of volunteer time. The Emmet County Republican Womens meeting on Monday, Feb. 20th, 2012, will host guest speaker Sandra Khan, president of the Republican Womens Federation of Michigan, Gail Martin, Emmet County Clerk and also tentatively invited to speak are Congressman Dan Benishek and State Representative Frank Foster.
