A record crowd for a Hot August Night

Memorial Park was packed Sunday with a record attendance estimated at more than 3,500 people — and some family dogs — when the Neil Diamond tribute band Hot August Night took the stage to present the final performance of this summer’s Music in the Park concert series.

Lead singer Dean Colley convincingly evoked the singer-songwriter Diamond, from his sounds to his attire, in a well-paced concert that brought many in the audience to their feet for some vintage dance moves.

The concert series, presented by the city of La Cañada Flintridge, has been a summer tradition going back about 20 years, according to Carl Alameda, senior management analyst for the city, who added that the early seasons offered just six concerts, which in more recent years has been expanded to every Sunday night, June through August.

“The 2012 concert series saw the highest attendance of any season, featuring 14 concerts, a classic car show and a movie night,” Alameda said, attributing the record turnout for the Aug. 26 concert to the fact that local public schools returned to session Tuesday, bringing families home from vacation in time for the concert.
