A look at how each player on the 2003 roster came to be a Bear.

Thirty-two of the 53 players on the active roster (60.4%) were either draftees of the Bears or undrafted free agents signed with the Bears. Only one player (R.W. McQuarters) was acquired via trade.

ACTIVE ROSTER
Rabih Abdullah, RB: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2002. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1998, where he played until signing with the Bears.

Jerry Azumah, CB: 5th-round pick (147th overall) in 1999 draft.

Marty Booker, WR: 3rd-round pick (78th overall) in 1999 draft.

Alfonso Boone, DT: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2000. Originally drafted in the 7th round (253rd overall), next-to-last by the Detroit Lions in 2000, just ahead of teammate Mike Green. Signed with the Bears at the end of the 2000 season after spending most of it on the Lions' practice squad.

Lance Briggs, LB: 3rd-round pick (68th overall) in 2003 draft.

Alex Brown, DE: 4th-round pick (104th overall) in 2002 draft.

Mike Brown, FS: 2nd-round pick (39th overall) in 2000 draft.

Chris Chandler, QB: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2002. Originally drafted in the 3rd round (76th overall) by the Indianapolis Colts in 1988, the Bears are his seventh team.

Desmond Clark, TE: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2003. Originally drafted in the 6th round (179th overall) by the Denver Broncos in 1999, the Bears are his third team.

Phillip Daniels, DE: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2000. Originally drafted in the 4th round (99th overall) by the Seattle Seahawks in 1996, where he played until signing with the Bears.

Paul Edinger, K: 6th-round pick (174th overall) in 2000 draft.

Steve Edwards, T: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2002. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2002, he was claimed by the Bears off of the Eagles practice squad.

Brock Forsey, RB: 6th-round pick (206th overall) in 2003 draft.

Justin Gage, WR: 5th-round pick (143rd overall) in 2003 draft.

Mike Gandy, G: 3rd-round pick (68th overall) in 2001 draft.

Aaron Gibson, T: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2002. Originally drafted in the 1st round (27th overall) by the Detroit Lions in 1999, the Bears are his third team, and first that doesn't wear silver and blue.

John Gilmore, TE: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2002. Originally drafted in the 6th round (196th overall) by the New Orleans Saints in 2002, he picked up with the Bears after being cut by the Saints at the end of training camp.

Bobby Gray, SS: 5th-round pick (140th overall) in 2002 draft.

Mike Green, SS: 7th-round pick (254th overall), "Mr. Irrelevant" in the 2000 draft, just behind teammate Alfonso Boone.

Rex Grossman, QB: 1st-round pick (22nd overall) in 2003 draft.

Michael Haynes, DE: 1st-round pick (14th overall) in 2003 draft.

Hunter Hillenmeyer, LB: Joined practice squad 9/13/2003 after being waived by the Green Bay Packers on 9/10/2003. Was fifth-round pick by the Packers in the 2003 draft.

Warrick Holdman, OLB: 4th-round pick (106th overall) in 1999 draft.

Bryan Knight, OLB: 5th-round pick (165th overall) in 2002 draft.

Olin Kreutz, C: 3rd-round pick (64th overall) in 1998 draft.

Corbin Lacina, G: Signed as a waived free agent five days before start of 2003 season. Originally drafted in the sixth round (167th overall) by the Buffalo Bills in 1993, the Bears are his fourth team.

Tron LaFavor, DT: 5th-round pick (171st overall) in 2003 draft.

Dustin Lyman, TE: 3rd-round pick (87th overall) in 2000 draft.

Patrick Mannelly, C: 6th-round pick (189th overall) in 1998 draft.

Brad Maynard, P: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2001. Originally drafted in the 3rd round (95th overall) by the New York Giants in 1997, where he played until signing with the Bears.

Todd McMillon, CB: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2000. He spent three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League before signing with the Bears.

R.W. McQuarters, CB: Traded to the Bears by the San Francisco 49ers before the 2000 season in exchange for a conditional 2001 draft pick. Originally drafted in the 1st round (28th overall) by the 49ers in 1998.

Ahmad Merritt, WR: Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2000.

Terrence Metcalf, G: 3rd-round pick (93rd overall) in 2002 draft.

Joe Odom, LB: 6th-round pick (191st overall) in 2003 draft.

Adrian Peterson, RB: 6th-round pick (199th overall) in 2002 draft.

Stanley Pritchett, FB: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2001. Originally drafted in the fourth round (118th overall) by the Miami Dolphins in 1996, the Bears are his third team.

Bryan Robinson, DE: Acquired as a waived free agent in 1998. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the St. Louis Rams in 1997, where he played 11 games before signing with the Bears after his rookie season.

Ian Scott, DT: 4th-round pick (116th overall) in 2003 draft.

Scott Sanderson, OT: Signed as a waived free agent after Week 1 of 2003 season. Was cut from the New Orleans Saints early September 2003, also spent time with the Tennessee Titans.

Kordell Stewart, QB: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2003. Originally drafted in the 2nd round (60th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers, who waived him in favor of former XFL star Tommy Maddox in the off-season.

Joe Tafoya, DE: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2001. Originally drafted in the seventh round (234th overall) by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001, he was waived at the end of training camp and signed with the Bears.

David Terrell, WR: 1st-round pick (8th overall) in the 2001 draft.

Anthony Thomas, RB: 2nd-round pick (38th overall) in the 2001 draft.

Charles Tillman, DB: 2nd-round pick (35th overall) in 2003 draft.

Keith Traylor, DT: Acquired as an unrestricted free agent in 2001. Originally drafted in the third round (61st overall) by the Denver Broncos in 1991, he played two separate stints with them. The Bears are his fourth team.

Brian Urlacher, MLB: 1st-round pick (9th overall) in 2000 draft.

Chris Villarrial, G: 5th-round pick (152nd overall) in 1996 draft.

Bobby Wade, WR: 5th-round pick (139th overall) in 2003 draft.

Josh Warner, G: Signed as waived free agent early 2002. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants in 2001, he spent two seasons with the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe. He was a member of the World Bowl X champion Thunder in 2002.

Dez White, WR: 3rd-round pick (69th overall) in 2000 draft.

Brock Williams, CB: Signed as a waived free agent late August 2003. Originally drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots in 2002.

Cameron Worrell, DB: Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2003.

PRACTICE SQUAD
Bryan Anderson, G: 7th-round pick (261st overall) in 2003 draft.

Jason McKie, FB: Claimed as a waived free agent in mid-August 2003 from the Dallas Cowboys. Signed to practice squad after being cut.

Qasim Mitchell, G: Signed to practice squad Sept. 17 after he was released by the Browns. He spent the 2002 season on Cleveland's injured reserve list.

Cliff Washburn, DE: Signed to practice squad Sept. 9, 2003 after being cut by the New York Giants.

PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM LIST (can't play until Week 7)
Marc Colombo, T: 1st-round pick (29th overall) in 2002 draft.

John Davis, TE: Acquired as a waived free agent in 2001. Originally drafted in the 5th round of the supplemental draft by the Dallas Cowboys in 1994, the Bears are his fifth team, though only his third with regular-season playing time.
