1896: McKINLEY, HOBART, AND TANNER: In a bitter battle over monetary policy, Ohio Gov. William McKinley (and his running mate Garret Hobart) beat William Jennings “Cross of Gold” Bryan. In the Illinois gubernatorial race, Republican challenger John Tanner unseated John Altgeld. Possibly more exciting than monetary policy was the Tribune’s first banner headline announcing a presidential election result. The page adopted a modern feel in other ways, too, with bold subheads directing readers to results from different races, an idea started in 1892 but better executed here, instead of forcing readers to endure one long story.
