Berwyn police doing well-being check discover dead man in apartment

Berwyn police doing a well-being check Thursday discovered a decomposed body in an apartment rented by a doctor near MacNeal Hospital, a city official said.

A maintenance worker at the building in the 3200 block of Oak Park Avenue called police about 10:15 a.m. Thursday requesting a well-being check because no one remembered recently seeing the doctor who rented the unit and worked at the hospital, said City Administrator Brian Pabst.

According to the Cook County medical examiner's office, the man has been identified as Jon Azkue, 54, of the address where the body was found. According to autopsy results from the medical examiner, the man died of asphyxia after placing a plastic bag connected to a helium tank over his head. His death was ruled a suicide.

When police entered, they found the body and also saw two propane tanks inside. That prompted a call for a hazardous material response team, but police did not find any explosives or evidence that the tanks presented a threat, Pabst said.

He said a number of doctors rent units in the building because of its proximity to the hospital, which is less than a block away.
