Dr. Mitchell C. Posner, Thomas D. Jones professor of surgery and chief of the Section of General Surgery and surgical oncology, has been appointed medical director of clinical cancer programs at the University of Chicago Medicine. Posner, 56, came to UChicago Medicine in 1995 as chief of surgical oncology and director of the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program. Before that, he served as director of the Colorectal and Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at the Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. In 2005, he was appointed chief of the Section of General Surgery. In 2006, he became vice chairman of the Department of Surgery, and a year later was named vice chairman of clinical affairs. Posner has won the University's Robert J. Baker Award for Excellence in Teaching, as well as the Basic Science and Clinical Research Award from the Society of Surgical Oncology. He has also served as chairman of the Gastrointestinal Committee of the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group.
