The Mesirow chief executive had been battling cancer, yet his unexpected death reverberated throughout Chicago. The South Side native was a big player in civic and philanthropic circles. His love of the city also motivated him to save the Chicago Sun-Times two years ago. Without his leadership, though, the investment group he put together to buy the paper out of bankruptcy looked for new investors. The paper will remain in local hands as Michael Ferro, a technology entrepreneur, and other high-profile businessmen agreed in December to acquire the media company.
