( Jung Yeon-Je/AFP/Getty Images / July 19, 2012 ) Global economic uncertainty and stock market turmoil left investors searching for safer assets. One of the most popular, as is typical when times are tough, was gold. The precious metal peaked in September at more than $1,900 an ounce.
