Our group is ALIOS, which stands for "A Little Island of Sanity." We are nine Lombard women who have been meeting in our homes since September 2005.
Favorite book: "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. We spent most of the evening talking about it, generating a lot of ideas, and we didn't run out of things to talk about.
Other books we liked: "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen and "The Shipping News" by E. Annie Proulx.
We were fascinated by and would love to meet Norah Vincent, who wrote "Self-Made Man," her nonfiction story of passing as a man for a year. We'd ask how her experiences colored her own relationships in the years after she wrote the book. We are still trying to convince one of our husbands or sons to read it and give us his opinions!
Several of us did not appreciate "My Love Affair With Modern Art" by Katharine Kuh, mainly because the author focused on telling other people's stories and seemed to rely on name-dropping.
Up next: "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende. We look forward to great characters and a plot reflecting on history and on how a seed planted one day will grow into something quite unexpected.
