Our home base is Woodstock, Marengo and Union, Illinois. Our group of 15 to 20 members has been meeting for 20-plus years.
We meet the fourth Thursday of the month, and each member is assigned one meeting per year
The hostess chooses the book for the month. This provides us with a chance to read many different subjects and authors.
The book must be available as a trade paperback or at the library. We rarely do current bestsellers because of cost and availability. We try not to repeat an author.
We've read some 250 books so it is difficult to select just one favorite. Here are somve we have enjoyed: "The 5 Love Languages" by Gary Chapman was applicable to our lives, not just marriage, but all of our relationships. "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer) made us feel that we were actually in that time and place. In "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" by Lisa See, we felt the pain and emotion of the circumstances.
Our least favorite book was "Fish! A Proven Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results" by Stephen C. Lundin was too centered on small business practices. It was not relevant to our lives.
The authors we'd like to meet are J.K. Rowling, to understand her journey through the success of the series; J.R.R. Tolkien, to find out how one creates a story with such depth and with so many characters, and Mark Twain, to explore his politicism and sense of humor.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
