Mount Athos in Greece

According to religion, as soon as the Blessed Virgin set foot on Athos, she asked Jesus to make this place Her Garden. From that moment on, Mount Athos has been off limits to all women. The ban is still effective today, the island allows only men to visit and houses 20 orthodox monasteries where monks receive pilgrims and meditate. Around 350,000 Orthodox devotees travel to Mount Athos every year.
