One thing to know about our book club
We are the Bookies. We started as neighbors, living on Edgewood Lane in Winnetka in the late 1990s. We have since grown to 17 members.
We meet monthly, mostly in the evenings. Each year we have one couples discussion and one discussion with a professional facilitator.
A few of the most interesting discussions we've had were on: "Room" by Emma Donoghue, "The Marriage Plot" by Jeffrey Eugenides, "Special Topics in Calamity Physics" by Marisha Pessl and "Restless" by William Boyd.
Authors we'd like to meet
Richard Russo, Ann Patchett and Barbara Kingsolver.
"The Round House" by Louise Erdrich, "Ethan Frome" by Edith Wharton, "Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides, "The Hummingbird's Daughter" by Luis Alberto Urrea, "Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri and "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel.
We didn't like
"The Winter Zoo" by John Beckman.
Next month is our annual couples group, and we will be reading "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson. After that we're doing "We Were the Mulvaneys" by Joyce Carol Oates.
