Participating in Twitter chats can be a simple way to find other people with whom you share an interest or industry. It's also an especially great way to build your network and credibility online by showing your own expertise and passion around given topics.
Twitter chats are simply a public conversation held on Twitter. They are open to anyone, held at designated times (generally as either a one-off about a certain topic, or at a standing day and time for specific industries or interests such as #TravelTuesday), and are entirely threaded together by a common hashtag (word following a "#" sign) predetermined by the chat organizers.
To participate in a Twitter chat, first find a chat of interest. Brands and organizations will almost always announce upcoming chats on their Twitter accounts in the days prior so the simplest way to find a chat is to follow accounts on Twitter that are in line with your interests and values. Soon enough, you'll probably see mention of an upcoming Twitter chat.
To find a Twitter chat more immediately: While logged in to your Twitter account, enter "twitter chat" into the search bar. This search will return results about a variety of twitter chats and allow you to toggle between "all" chats in order of most recently-mentioned and "top" chats, which will show results based on popularity. In either view, review results to find a topic of interest, or refine results with an additional word in the search field, such as "twitter chat sew."
Most often, though, users find Twitter chats in-progress when someone in his or her network seems to be conversing with other users and including the same hashtag in each tweet. To view, confirm and join the conversation of the Twitter chat, click on the hashtag. Doing so will reveal the tweets of everyone, globally, who is participating in the Twitter chat by including the designated hashtag in his or her tweets.
From here, ask or answer a question or comment by tweeting and including the hashtag each time, exactly as it is written by the rest of the group.
As you interact with other people involved in that chat, your account's potential expands beyond the people in your social network and exposes your tweets to the network of the people interacting with you. And doing that shows your passion and expertise to not only your own followers but to the followers of others involved in the tweet as well.
