He’s Buddhist, she’s Hindu. His parents came from Sri Lanka, hers from India. She loves Bollywood movies, he can’t stand them.
But from the moment they met at a wedding in 2003, first-generation Americans Priya Joshi and Krish Hatharasinghe clicked. “It always felt right,” Joshi said, “like two pieces of a puzzle.”
She’s now 28 and a registered nurse. He’s 29 and a realtor with the Prudential Americana Group in Thousand Oaks.
“Both of us put our hearts and souls into our wedding,” said Joshi. Working with Planning Elegance, South Asian event specialists in Orange County, they brought their dream to life — a two-day multicultural tapestry attended by 260 guests.
On Nov. 11 they tied the knot in a Hindu ceremony — complete with the groom’s traditional entrance on a white horse — at the Shri Laxmi Narayan Mandir Hindu Society in Riverside.
The following day, they wed again in a Buddhist ceremony at the Marina Del Rey Marriott.
A lavish reception followed, with an Indian feast, Sri Lankan dancers and a live band whose sound was pure American.
“It was a nice mix of cultures,” said the groom, “and it brought our families closer.”
