2012 Day of Diversity: Story by Jalisa Stanislaus

With more than a dozen sports teams,

Hampton University

athletics has something to offer all students. Whether you go to a football game or a tennis match the HU atmosphere is filled with much energy and enthusiasm; Pirate pride exudes from all students.

On October 13, HU played Norfolk State in the Battle of the Bay football game in Armstrong Stadium. Approximately 8,500 people cheered both teams on. Throughout the game HU chants could be heard beyond the stands and playing field. The Pirates led NSU for most of the game and HU alumni and students were exhilarated. The crowd shouted in unison “Rock the blue and White” and “I love my HU”.

“ The game was extremely packed on both sides. My favorite part of the game was halftime because it was the first time that I’ve seen HU students have a genuine school spirit,” said Brianna Dance, junior public relations major from Bowie, Md. “I saw body paint, school paraphernalia and a lot of posters.”

The Hampton University men’s basketball team opened it’s season on November 9 against William & Mary at Kaplan Arena. Students throughout HU’s campus are excited for the start of the men and women’s basketball season.

“I look forward to seeing my

champs show out on the courts as usual,” said D’Andrea Doyle, print journalism major junior from Los Angeles, Calif. “The atmosphere at basketball games is unexplainable. Everyone plays a part in filling seats in convocation and the entertainment is exceptional.”

The Hampton University marching band, Blue Thunder, Ebony fire, The majestics and many other organizations provide entertainment for all athletic games. The music, dance and atmosphere they promote makes all events at HU fun and exciting.
