In the rough-and-tumble world of music making, persistence pays. The youngsters in Williamsburg's UnXpected competed in a blues contest in Virginia Beach back in July, but were edged out by Carbon Jam.
Undeterred, they traveled to play in the DC Blues Society's annual battle of the bands Oct. 13 in Wheaton, Md.
This time, they triumphed. The UnXpected will represent the DC Blues Society in the Youth Showcase at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., Feb. 1, 2013, according to band publicist Scott Salsberry.
In Memphis, they may even run into Carbon Jam who'll be there representing Hampton Roads and the Natchel' Blues Network.
The UnXpected is fronted by dynamic 12-year-old bassist and singer Logan Layman. The band also features Cole Layman, 15, guitar and vocals; Kevin Marks, 12, drums; Zachary Salsberry, 12, on guitar and vocals; and Tyler Bevington, 12, on keyboards.
Here's the band playing at yet another contest back in September.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
