Home gardening company W. Atlee Burpee & Co. takes the guesswork out of planting a vegetable garden with the introduction this season of the "Garden Time Planner" App, enabling both neophyte and experienced gardeners to know when and how to sow and transplant, according to a company news release.
The Garden Time App is intended for Android 4.0 devices and above and will run on both phones and tablet devices. The app helps gardeners know when to sow, transplant and expect to harvest vegetables and herbs specific to their garden region.
The new app automatically creates a task list to notify the user when their next sow or transplant date arrives. Included is a full database of plants, local weather and links to the many "how-to" gardening videos produced by Burpee and available free on the company's website.
According to George Ball, chairman of Burpee, based in
"In recent years," Mr. Ball says in the news release, "we have seen thousands of first time home gardeners planting vegetable gardens to control both the quality of the food they put on their tables and in response to the soaring costs being encountered in supermarkets." In addition, the Burpee chief executive points to the number of different varieties of vegetables and herbs in the catalog and on the website.
“Even well-seasoned veteran gardeners were inquiring about growing conditions for the many new items introduced each gardening season.”
