Folks at Marco's Pizza, naturally, would like you to try their made-from-scratch pizza pie. It's their specialty.

The Ohio-based chain — which operates a pair of shops in Hampton — has been cranking out fresh pizza locally for three years now. An award-winning pizza variety, called the White Cheezy, features Feta cheese, bacon, sliced tomatoes and garlic butter sauce.

Sounds delicious.

Not to take anything away from Marco's main attraction, but I was recently impressed by another dish: its hearty Italian Sub, which turned out to be a solid lunch option for a cool autumn afternoon.

The sandwich's sub roll was fresh and flakey — more like something pulled straight from the baker's oven than what you'll get in many family-style Italian joints. Inside the roll, came a generous portion of ham, along with some salami and plenty of tasty melted cheese. Marco's uses a blend of three cheeses to ensure the right mix of flavor and gooey consistency.

The Italian Sub is topped with tomato and onion slices, a sprinkling of banana peppers and a dash or two of Italian dressing. Assembled then toasted into the oven, the sandwich is served warm in a box that's a rectangular version of one you get from the pizza delivery man. Salty, tangy and rich, the Italian Sub was satisfying.

This is a simple sandwich that benefits from simplicity. Is it radically different from the Italian sub you'll get at a dozen or more pizza palaces across the Peninsula? No. It does, however, stand out for its freshness. As is often the case, the deliciousness is in the details.
