Here's some general Guinea Jubilee news updates.
First off, applications for the annual Guinea Heritage Association scholarship, typically valued at $500, are due on May 1.
Complete applications can be downloaded at www.guineajubilee.com. There are qualifications such as a minimum grade point average and justified financial need, although preference is given to applicants with a family or personal association with the Guinea area, according to a press release.
Completed applications should be given to the Gloucester High School guidance office or by mail to: GHA Scholarship, Attn.: Tara Thomas, P.O. Box 411, Bena VA 23018.
The second thing to share is that a call is being put out for entries for the 2013 Guinea Jubilee print contest from artists and photographers.
The prize for the first-place winning artist is $750. The runner-up receives $100.
There's no specific theme so the artist should consider the Guinea area and culture or the event being celebrated when creating their art entry.
The deadline is June 15. The entry fee is $25.
The Guinea Jubilee is scheduled for Sept. 27 and 28. For more information call 804-642-9002.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
