For the first time, Hampton Bay Days will host a BBQ Challenge.
The Sept. 10 event is limited to 25 entries, and each team will need to submit entries into four categories to be considered for the Grand Champion honor. Categories are beef brisket, pork ribs (loin or spare), pork (shoulder, butt, or picnic), and poultry.
Set-up will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and judging will begin at noon Saturday, Sept. 10. The competition is governed by the rules of the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Cost to enter is $250 for KCBS members and $275 for non-KCBS members.
The Grand Champion winner will receive a trophy and $1,250. Other cash awards will be awarded for reserve grand champion and individual categories.
The 2011 festival will take place Sept. 9-11, and about 200,000 people are expected to attend. Activities include musical entertainment, more than 100 vendors, bay education and a 30-minute fireworks display.
