Tool, purveyors of eerie hard rock, will clank and grind at Hampton Coliseum on Friday, Feb. 3, according to an announcement from concert promoters.
Tickets to the show go on sale 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. from the Coliseum box office and Ticketmaster. They'll be priced at $39.50 to $65, according to the Coliseum's website.
Tool's most recent CD is "10,000 Days" from 2006, but the group is reportedly working on new material. Opening act for the Hampton show will be YOB.
Led by enigmatic singer Maynard James Keenan, Tool hasn't performed in Hampton Roads in years. The group played Richmond Coliseum in 2007, but shows closer to home have been few and far between. Looking back through the Daily Press archive, I found a story advancing the group's Sept. 29, 2001 concert at Virginia Beach Amphitheater. Before then, the band put on a memorable show as part of the traveling Lollapalooza festival at the same venue in 1997.
One of Keenan's other bands, A Perfect Circle, has played locally more often in recent years. A Tool show in these parts is a rarity in these parts, though. For those who like creepy, intelligent hard rock, word of the Coliseum date is good, dark news for a bright new year.
