Isle of Wight to hold forum on coal plant's health risks
– A panel of speakers will discuss the potential health and environmental impact of Old Dominion Electric Cooperative's proposed coal-fueled power plant in neighboring Surry County during a community forum next week.
Speakers scheduled for the Feb. 15 meeting include Richmond physician Dr. Christine Llewelyn, former Virginia Department of Environmental Quality director Robert Burnley and Chris Moore, of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors meeting room.
Both the Surry County Board of Supervisors and the Dendron Town Council approved Old Dominion's land-use applications for the facility last week. Also last week, the Sussex County Board of Supervisors approved the company's permits for an alternate site in that county.
Last month, the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors sent its Surry officials a letter, urging the board to delay a decision until an independent environmental study could be done.
