Myra Smith Experience, based in Hampton, will open for Brandy in Portsmouth Nov. 17

Hampton's own Myra Smith, a powerhouse R&B and gospel vocalist who has performed in Jae Sinnett's funk band as well as on her own, will open for pop star Brandy at Willett Hall in Portsmouth on Saturday, Nov. 17.

The Myra Smith Experience, her seven-member ensemble, will perform a mix of original tunes and familiar covers, Smith told me Wednesday afternoon. The set will include songs from Smith's debut album "Undying Love," released back in February.

"It's going to be high energy," Smith said. "We have a great band, great singers. We're going to give them something to talk about, definitely."

In recent years, Smith has shared stages with acts including Eric Roberson, N'dambi and Jill Scott. Still, Smith said the Brandy show is a big one, and potentially a big step for her career.

"I'm a Brandy fan," Smith said. "I would go to this concert just to see her. To be able to perform, it's going to be amazing ... I'm excited and nervous, but more more excited than nervous."

Myra, growing up in a military family, lived in Germany for 13 years before moving to the Hampton Roads area.

Before that move, Myra traveled internationally and within the United States as a praise and worship leader, her bio states.  She opened for Donald Lawrence, Byron Cage, Ted and Sherri, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Roy Ayers, and Micky Howard. She's also sung background for Jean Carne and Ted Wynn, according to her bio.

Tickets to the Brandy-Myra Smith show are $29.50 to $39.50 in advance. Showtime is 8 p.m.
