National Weather Service confirms 7th tornado locally

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has confirmed that a seventh tornado -- this one in Mathews -- touched down Monday during a flurry of storms that devastated southeastern Virginia.

The tornado touched down in Mathews County, it was a category EF0 with wind speeds near 65 mph, which was much weaker than the one that touched down in Suffolk which was an EF3 with estimated winds of 160 mph.

"Initially we were confused as to whether the Gloucester and Mathews County incidents were a single incident," said Bill Sammler, a meteorologist with the weather service. Sammler said the seventh tornado was confirmed late Tuesday afternoon.

Areas now confirmed to have been hit by tornadoes are:

City of Suffolk (strong EF3)

City of Colonial Heights (EF1)

Brunswick Counties (EF1)

Gloucester County (EF0)

Mathews County (EF0)

Surry County (EF1)

Isle of Wight County (EF1)

In addition, there also was a tornado in Halifax County (EF1), bringing the state total to eight.
