ISLE OF WIGHT – Isle of Wight Sheriff's Deputy Matthew A. Lyons resigned Monday amid a state police investigation into allegations of Internet child pornography, said Sheriff Charlie Phelps.

Lyons, 21, who has worked for Sheriff's Office since Nov. 1, 2010, has not been charged, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michele Anaya.

Lyons, a patrol deputy during most of the time he worked for the department, spent about four weeks on temporary assignment at Windsor Elementary School last year, Phelps said.

According to search warrants and other documents filed Monday in Isle of Wight Circuit Court, state police investigators seized two computers from Lyons' mobile home in the 11200 block of Cindale Drive in Smithfield on Sept. 16. The warrants were issued in relation to allegations of child pornography possession and unlawful filming or photography, according to court documents.

According to court documents, the computers have been sent to the state police's high-tech crime division for analysis.

According to the warrants, Lyons requested "explicit naked images" of 12-, 14- and 16-year-old girls and images of minors engaged in sexual acts in the message area of a personal Yahoo account left open on a computer used by multiple deputies.

Phelps said he called for the state police investigation about two weeks ago after another deputy brought Lyons' email to his attention. Another deputy confirmed for state investigators that the Yahoo account belonged to Lyons, according to the warrant.

This is the second allegation of sexual miscounduct involving an Isle of Wight Sheriff's Office employee this year. In July, former investigator Ronald Carwile pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual abuse of a minor and is now serving a four-month jail sentence.
