New volunteer oyster gardeners will be trained at a seminar on Aug. 16 at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is conducting the seminar from 6-7:30 p.m. in Watermen's Hall, said a CBF spokeswoman. Volunteers will learn about current water quality issues and how oyster restoration is vital to saving Chesapeake Bay.
The CBF staff will teach techniques for growing oysters from docks or marina slips. In one year, oyster gardeners will return their oysters for planting on local sanctuary reefs.
Volunteers should bring $30 to cover the cost of the 1,000 native oyster seed and it includes membership in CBF. Other materials are purchased separately.
