The Virginia High School League's indoor track state championships for Group AAA began Friday, and no Peninsula District schools were at the head of the pack.
The two-day event is being held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. There are 908 athletes representing 111 high schools competing in the state meet, with seven of the 10 Peninsula District schools having participants. Defending champions in both girls and boys, Western Branch, entered 61 athletes.
Among the local schools, Gloucester's girls were tied for seventh place with six points after three events. Points for team standings are awarded for the first eight places.
Jazmine Banks of Gloucester placed third in the shot put with a throw of 40-02.50.
