ACC All Access: Cornerback Donaldven Manning remains on team, but won't travel with Virginia Tech to BC

Virginia Tech cornerback Donaldven Manning will remain a member of the team, but won’t travel with the team to play Saturday at Boston College, according to a release from Tech’s athletic department.

Manning, a 5-foot-9, 155-pound true freshman backup from Miami, and coach Frank Beamer met Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss Manning’s future with the team. The reason for and exact nature of the meetings wasn’t revealed by Beamer, defensive coordinator Bud Foster or defensive backs coach Torrian Gray.

“I expect Donaldven to learn from this and to have success at Virginia Tech,” Beamer said in the released statement.

With Manning staying behind for this weekend’s trip to BC (2-8 overall, 1-5 ACC), Tech will go with sophomore walk-on Carl Jackson as the backup to starting cornerback Kyle Fuller. Manning has played in seven games this season, logging four tackles and one interception.

Among the defensive backs, Fuller is the only scholarship player on the two-deep for Tech (4-6, 2-4) that played the same position last year he’s playing this year. He sat out the first two days of practice this week while recovering from an injury, according to Gray.
