NORFOLK, Va. The Norfolk Admirals have signed four players to tryout contracts while releasing two players from training camp.
Forward Justin Keller will return to the Admirals for a third season after being signed to a Professional Tryout Contract (PTO). Also signed to a PTO is forward Tommy Goebel and goaltender Jaroslav Janus while forward Travis Whitehead has been signed to an Amateur Tryout Contract (ATO).
In addition, defenseman Trevor Hendrikx and forward Stephen Werner have been released from their training camp tryout contracts.
Keller, a 6-foot, 181-pound forward from Nelson, British Columbia, appeared in 58 games for the Admirals last season, scoring 18 goals and 19 assists. In 128 career games with the Admirals, the 23-year-old fourth-year pro has 33 goals and 41 assists. Keller also appeared in four games with the ECHL's Augusta Lynx last season, recording four goals and one assist.
In 2007-08, Keller tied for third in goals (15) and was fourth in points (37) with Norfolk. He represented the Admirals at the AHL All-Star Classic in Binghamton, New York. Keller was an eighth-round draft pick (245th overall) of the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004. He made his pro debut in 2006-07 with the AHL's Springfield Falcons, scoring 13 goals and adding 11 assists in 60 games. In 188 career American Hockey League games, Keller has scored 46 goals and added 52 assists.
Goebel, a 5-foot-7, 170-pound forward from Parma, Ohio, appeared in 25 games with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last season, recording four goals and eight assists. He also skated in 35 games with the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers and scored 14 goals and 28 assists. The undrafted 24-year-old has appeared in 30 career AHL games between the Penguins and Rochester Americans, scoring six goals and 11 assists.
Janus, 5-11, 192 pounds, was a sixth-round draft pick (162nd overall) of the Lightning at last summer's NHL entry draft. He completed his second OHL season with Erie in 2008-09, posting a 25-20-3 record with a 3.24 goals-against average in 49 games. He led the Otters in games played, wins with 25, shutouts with three and save percentage with .908. He also played in five playoff games with Erie, posting a shutout and a 1-4-0 record.
A native of Presov, Slovakia, Janus played well at the 2009 World Junior Championships with team Slovakia. He posted a 3-4-0 record with a 3.20 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage in seven games played.
Janus has played in 97 career OHL games, posting a 38-49-5 record with a 3.81 goals-against average.
Whitehead, a 6-foot, 205-pound forward from Cambridge, Ontario, is making his professional debut. He appeared in 25 games last season for the Buffalo State College Bengals, scoring two goals and five assists. In 82 career collegiate games between the Bengals and the University of Wisconsin-Superior, he has 12 goals and 16 assists. He also has 30 goals and 36 assists in 103 career junior games in the North American Hockey League between the Fernie Ghostriders and Helena Bighorns.
