Norfolk’s hopes of reaching the AHL playoffs were dealt a blow Tuesday night when the Admirals lost 3-2 to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (37-28-2-2) before 4,118 at Scope Arena.
The Admirals (33-30-4-1) trailed 3-0 before third-period goals by Kyle Bonis and Devante Smith-Pelly.
On the night their parent club, Pittsburgh, saw its 15-game NHL winning streak end, the Penguins took control with goals by Trevor Smith in the first period and by Riley Holzapfel and Chris Collins late in the second period.
The Admirals stayed two points (one victory) behind the Hershey Bears, who hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. But now the Bears have played one fewer game.
