Five athletes from the Peninsula to be inducted into Hampton Roads African American Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday

African American Sports Hall of Fame will hold their inducation on Saturday at the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth.

Among the inductees are five athletes from the Peninsula:

Terry Kirby

(former Tabb and U.Va. football star who spent 10 seasons in the

NFL

), Lisa Rice (basketball player at Gloucester High and Norfolk State),

Chris Slade

(former Tabb and U.Va. football star who still holds the sack record for the

New England Patriots

nearly seven years after retirement), the late Ron Springs (Lafayette High football player who starred with the

Dallas Cowboys

and

Washington Redskins

) and the late Walt "Fuzzy" Ward (basketball star at

Hampton University

who was the first NBA player drafted from HU).

Other inductees include: Darren Perry, Morris Smith, James Church, Ken Whitley, William "Shorty" Gray, William Lassiter and Argle "A.B." Whitfield.
