Saturday's college baseball roundup: Farrell improves to 7-0 by pitching W&M past Towson

John Farrell (7-0) pitched seven shutout innings and Ryan Lindemuth was 3-for-4 — including a home run — with three runs and two RBIs to guide William and Mary to a 5-2 win at Towson Saturday afternoon.

Mike Papi’s grand slam off the scoreboard in right-center field capped a five-run ninth-inning rally that gave Virginia (28-3, 10-3 ACC) a 7-6 win at Wake Forest (17-15, 4-9).

The Cavaliers were down to their final strike before their uprising. U.Va. left-hander Kyle Crockett of Poquoson gained his fifth save of the year by striking out the side in the ninth. ...

N.C. State, ranked 25th in the writers' poll, pounded No. 30 Virginia Tech 13-4 in Raleigh. N.C., for its second straight win in the series.

N.C. State (23-10, 7-7 ACC) scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 4-2 lead held by Tech (21-11, 7-7 ACC). Bryan Adametz was 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs for the Wolfpack. For the Hokies, Chad Morgan batted 2-for-3, while Poquoson’s Chad Pinder was 1-for-5 with an RBI.


Norfolk State swept Delaware State 5-3 and 4-2 in Dover, giving the Spartans a pair of wins against the first-place team in the MEAC Northern Division and defending divisional champs.

The Spartans improved to 10-17, 6-5 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Delaware State fell to 19-9, 9-2.

Junior-college transfer Zach Markel hit the first two homers of his Spartans career, while freshman Robert Barefoot (Game 1) and Kyle Vaas (Game 2) hit their first collegiate homers.

USA South:

Christopher Newport split a doubleheader at North Carolina Wesleyan to wrap up the USA South regular-season championship.

The Captains (26-9-1, 17-6) lost 1-0 in Game 1 but rolled to a 12-6 win in the nightcap over the Bishops (19-20, 15-8), who earned the No. 2 seed for next week's tournament in Wilson and Zebulon, N.C.

NCWC's Will Beasley pitched a shutout to outduel Austin Chrismon (6-3) in the opener. But in Game 2, the Captains scored eight runs in the second inning.

Andy Viands, Preston Grisson, Justin Weaver, Jacob Houston and Kyle Corwin each drove in two runs for CNU, and Travis Younger was 2-for-3 with three runs.
