Dec. 16: Admirals beat Penguins 2-0
Admirals Ice Penguins 2-0 NORFOLK ADMIRALS (2) vs. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PENGUINS (0)
NORFOLK, Va. Dustin Tokarski made 26 saves and Brandon Bochenski inched closer to history as the Norfolk Admirals (14-15-1-0) shut out the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (13-13-1-1) 2-0 on Wednesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. The Admirals leapt over the Penguins into fourth place in the East Division standings and will battle the third place Binghamton Senators at Scope on Friday and Saturday nights.
After a scoreless opening period, the Admirals struck first with Mark Parrish's seventh goal of the season 12:48 into the second stanza. Scott Jackson sent a shot on net from the left point. The rebound popped into the slot and was swept to Parrish at the top of the left circle. The veteran NHL forward sent a shot through the leg pads of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goaltender John Curry.
The lead doubled midway through the third period. Parrish forced a Penguins turnover at the left point of the Norfolk zone. Ty Wishart then sent a long feed through neutral zone traffic to Brandon Bochenski at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton blueline for a breakaway. Bochenski sent a shot top shelf past Curry at 10:26 for his 15th goal of the season and his 75th career goal with Norfolk. He is now only one goal shy of tying Casey Hankinson's AHL Admirals record of 76 goals in an Admirals career.
Tokarski and the Admirals defense battened down the hatches in the third as none of the Penguins' 13 shots in the period found its intended target.
Dustin Tokarski (26 shots, 26 saves) picked up his ninth victory and second shutout of the season. John Curry (21 shots, 19 saves) got the loss.
Norfolk was 0-2 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-1.
The Admirals will welcome the Binghamton Senators to Scope for the final times this season on Friday and Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. There are several promotions on tap for this weekend's games.
On Saturday, the first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive the first set of 2009-10 Admirals trading cards, courtesy of John's Tax Service and The Virginian-Pilot. Look for randomly inserted limited edition gold parallel cards. There is one gold card in every 10 packs.
The Admirals' annual Toy Toss will also take place Saturday night. Admirals fans are asked to bring new stuffed toys to that game to throw onto the ice after the Admirals score their first goal. The Toy Toss is an official Marine Corps Toys For Tots event and a Norfolk Holidays In The City Event.
Also on Saturday, the Norfolk Admirals' wives and girlfriends will hold a holiday ornament auction to benefit The Joy Fund during the game. Custom-designed ornaments will be up for silent auction that night near Gate 14 on the Scope concourse. The ornaments were designed by the Admirals wives and girlfriends and are personalized to reflect the interests and personalities of Admirals and Lightning players. The Admirals will hold the silent auction through the second intermission. All proceeds will go to the Joy Fund.
Fans can cap off the weekend on Saturday with the Admirals with the second post-game skate of the season. Fans can skate at Scope with their favorite Admirals following the game. A limited number of skates will be available or fans may bring their own skates.
