Former William and Mary tennis All-American Megan Moulton-Levy reached Saturday’s doubles semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., joining Shuai Zhang to defeat Yaroslava Shvedova and Julia Goerges 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) on green clay.
Moulton-Levy, 28, is ranked 72nd among WTA doubles players.
The Norfolk Admirals gained a crucial 2-1 victory over the Binghamton Senators at Norfolk Scope Arena, helping their AHL playoff hopes.
The Admirals (34-30-4-1) stayed two points behind the Hershey Bears by two points for the eighth and final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference. The Bears, who have one more game remaining than Norfolk does, beat the host Syracuse Crunch 4-1.
Norfolk also stayed three points behind the seventh-place Connecticut Whale, which, like the Admirals, has seven games to play.
Steven Whitney scored his first Norfolk goal on a power play 8:06 into the game, and Patrick Maroon netted his 22nd on another power play 12:58 into the second period. Charles Sarault assisted on both goals.
The Senators cut the deficit in half in the third period, but standout goalie Frederik Andersen held on to preserve the victory.
Norfolk will play its home finale Saturday night against Binghamton, then will play its final six games on the road.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
