Thursday's girls high school basketball roundup: Romero, Kecoughtan improve to 7-0

Chelsey Romero had nine blocks, 12 points and eight rebounds Thursday to guide Kecoughtan to a 38-33 victory over Etowah of Woodstock, Ga., in The Rock Holiday Classic's first round in Windermere, Fla.

Romero was 3-of-4 on free throws in the final two minutes as the Warriors (7-0) put away the Eagles and advanced to Friday's semifinal against Holmes (Ky.). Romero went up against a 6-foot-3 opponent for much of the contest.

Alexsis Grate added nine points for Kecoughtan.

Ronald Curry/Boo Williams tournament:

Landstown edged Williamsburg Christian Academy 45-44 in an all-Eagles clash in the first round at Boo Williams Sportsplex.

Gabby Swinson hit the winning free throw with 6 seconds left. She had 16 points and eight rebounds for Landstown.

Jalynn Ponzo scored 16 and Keyana Brown 13 for WCA.

Tidewater Academy tournament:

Event MVP Cary Beahm netted 22 points as Tidewater Academy won its own tournament in Wakefield by defeating Isle of Wight Academy 48-22 for the championship.


Beahm had nine rebounds for the Warriors (8-3), and Taylor Pruitt scored six points and joined her on the all-tournament team.

Gabriella Hooper led IWA with eight points.

Summit Christian Academy, located near Tabb, beat StoneBridge for third place.
