Colby Goodwyn kept the tradition alive Thursday night at Darling Stadium.
Or so said Phoebus coach Stan Sexton when addressing his team following its 63-7 win over visiting Menchville. He was referring to Goodwyn's 226 rushing yards, which pushed him to 1,050 yards on the season.
Goodwyn also scored four touchdowns, including a 55-yard scamper and 63-yard run in the second half. The latter, coming with 10:52 left in the game, put Goodwyn over the 1,000-yard mark.
"It means everything," Goodwyn said. "The push I got from the line, the way everything just unfolded ... it was like having tunnel vision out there."
Phoebus had the ball 10 times on the night, scoring nine times. The end of the game prevented the Phantoms from scoring on the last drive. Phoebus converted all but one of its third downs, turning the only failed attempt into a fourth-down conversion in the second quarter.
"It's great when you can do things the way you want," Sexton said. "We threw a little to keep the defense honest, but the offensive line did a great job tonight."
Quarterback Paul Morant gave the Phantoms (7-0, 6-0 Peninsula District) their first score of the night with 9:59 left in the first quarter, when he took the snap, pitch-faking to the left before running the ball up the middle 10 yards for the score. Phoebus recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, only needing three more plays before Goodwyn ran up the middle 4 yards for his first score of the night to give the Phantoms a 14-0 lead.
Morant scored his second touchdown on Phoebus' next possession, capping an eight-play drive with a 2-yard scamper up the middle with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Chaz Robinson opened scoring in the second quarter with a 29-yard run down the right side with 8:03 left, before Goodwyn scored for the second time with 3:56 left in the half, punching it in from 1 yard.
Tyree Lee capped off the first-half scoring with 26 seconds left, taking the handoff from Morant to the right and running 4 yards to pay dirt to give the Phantoms a 42-0 lead.
In all, Phoebus ran for 405 yards and never punted. Menchville (1-6, 1-5) only had six first downs and 133 yards of offense. Only one first down came in the first half.
"To get a win when I pass 1,000 yards," Goodwyn said, "and all on Homecoming? It doesn't get much better."
