Everyone likes a good streak, from Ray Stevens to
them). In sports, they're virtually sacred. Who could imagine, for example, anyone touching
's 56-game hitting streak?
Yet streaks can be funny sometimes. Maybe even misleading.
Tonight, Phoebus is likely to win its 33rd consecutive Peninsula District game. That would break Hampton's mark set from 1980-84.
But think about Hampton's teams in the 1990s. Though the Crabbers won 40 in a row overall at one point, the longest district streak during that stretch was 28 games
But from the final week of the 1993 regular season through the first three games of 2000, Hampton won 59 of 61 PD games. The two losses: 12-8 to Kecoughtan in 1995, when wideout Marc Bacote was stopped at the 1-yard line on the game's final play, and 14-8 to Heritage in three years later in five overtimes.
In other words, the Crabbers were 12 points away from winning 61 straight games. And that, gang, would have been as untouchable as Joltin' Joe's 56.
