In the bracket’s top half,
HRA's Icelandic star exchange student, KJ Steinthorsson, rolled up 34 points, and speedy guard Quincy Mock added 16 for the Navigators. Sam Thomas led the Minutemen with 12.
Amelia Academy's Josh Bailey poured in 21 points and Deivdas Grigenas added 15. Hampton Christian's Evan Dougood led all scorers with 25, backed up by Stephen Iverson's 18.
Despite Brandon LaRose’s 17 points, Walsingham Academy lost 66-55 Wednesday to Matoaca in the first round of the Henrico Holiday Hoops Invitational.
The loss dropped the Trojans into a consolation game against J.R. Tucker, which fell 93-55 to Henrico, a state Group AAA semifinalist last season. Walsingham is the only team in its half of the eight-team bracket that isn’t a Richmond-area AAA school.
Tidewater Academy tournament:
Hunter Haywood scored 29 points to spark Tidewater Academy (5-4) to a 77-43 home win over Sovereign Grace in the first round of the Warriors’ Christmas tournament in Wakefield.
The Warriors will play for the title Thursday against StoneBridge, which defeated Summit Christian 67-30 as junior Chigozie Igbonagwam scored a career-high 28 points for the Cavaliers.
Taylor Pruitt had 21 points and five steals for Tidewater Academy as the host Warriors defeated StoneBridge 46-18 in the TA event's first round.
