Two Bay Rivers District football games are set for Thursday, when Smithfield plays Tabb and Lafayette hosts Poquoson.
SMITHFIELD (8-1, 7-1) VS. TABB (4-5, 4-4)
WHEN: 7 p.m.
WHERE: Bailey Field at York High.
THE BUZZ: Perhaps the marquee game of the week because both have so much to play for. Smithfield clinches at least a tie for the Bay Rivers District title with a victory. And while the Packers will have to wait and see how Chancellor does against James Monroe on Friday, the win could earn them the No. 1 seed in the Region I Division 4 playoffs. Tabb is simply trying to get into the Region I D-4 playoffs, a feat it can accomplish with a victory. A loss would mean the Tigers must depend on Jamestown and Grafton to lose (and perhaps get a little help with a James Monroe victory) or sit on the playoff sidelines for another year.
THE PICK: Smithfield 28-14.
POQUOSON (4-5, 3-5) VS. LAFAYETTE (8-1, 7-1)
WHEN: 7:15 p.m.
WHERE: Wanner Stadium
THE BUZZ: Both are in the playoffs already, but Lafayette comes in with much more incentive. With a victory, the Rams clinch at least a share of the Bay Rivers District title and snap a three-year losing streak against Poquoson. In addition, a win and a James Monroe loss to Chancellor (in what is a toss-up game) gives the Rams homefield advantage through the Region I Division 3 playoff and, should they make it that far, in the state semifinals.
THE PICK: Lafayette 27-17.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
