The already-short week for Hampton vs. Phoebus has become even shorter.
Hampton City Schools canceled classes on Monday due to weather concerns, which also means all extra-curricular activities are off. That includes football practice.
The Peninsula District’s Game of the Year, the Crabbers vs. the Phantoms, is scheduled for Thursday night at Darling Stadium. So both teams will now get only two days of preparation — at most.
“I hope we’re not out on Tuesday, too,” Hampton coach Mike Smith said. “If we are, that’ll make it one day.”
Jeremy Blunt, Phoebus’ interim coach, doesn’t want to think about that.
“It’s always important when you consider that your opponent changes week by week in terms of strengths and weaknesses,” Blunt said. “Definitely missing a day of preparation is huge. I hate it for the fans because it means both teams will be rusty.”
Neither team practiced on Saturday.
The game, normally played on Friday, was moved up a day to accommodate the weekend wedding of Smith’s daughter.Copyright © 2015, Los Angeles Times
