FREDERICKSBURG — York head coach Doug Pereira encouraged his players, particularly the Falcon seniors, to keep their heads held high and to shout with pride.
And while the players, coaches and loyal fans may ponder what might have been, there was a sense that the York High football team gave host
"Everyone played hard tonight. JM played hard; credit them for the victory," Pereira said. "I can't be more proud for the effort they gave tonight and this entire season."
On a fourth-and-goal play from the Yellow Jackets' 3-yard line, Marcus Wakelyn scored his second touchdown of the evening, tying the game at 21 with 4:28 left in the third quarter.
York was backed up on its 1-yard line on the Falcons' next possession and, after three plays, was forced to punt, giving JM excellent field possession at the Falcons' 36. Three plays later, Tony Scott scored the game-winning TD from 3 yards out.
York picked up a couple of first downs on its next possession, but eventually had to punt with 4:57 remaining. The Jackets picked up three first downs, successfully killing all but seven seconds from the scoreboard clock, leaving Falcons quarterback Austin Norman just one desperation pass before game's end.
The Falcons were trying to avenge a 45-7 defeat last year against JM, which went on to state runner-up honors. This year's Yellow Jackets will play host to Park View of South Hill in next week's regional final.
