HAMPTON — For Kecoughtan, a coveted non-district win against a quality opponent was there for the taking. All the Warriors had to do was take care of the ball.
In the end, that was too much. Cape Henry Collegiate scored the final five points and rallied for a 57-56 win Friday night in the Kecoughtan Holiday Classic. Devon Hall's runner gave the Dolphins the lead with 10 seconds left, and Rodney Bullock's shot bounced out just before the horn.
The Warriors (7-2) led 56-51 with 2:31 left but went 0-for-2 with two turnovers the rest of the way.
After Hall's follow cut the lead to 56-53, Marcell Haskett was called for a five-second violation. The ball went back to Cape Henry, and Chris Clarke went 2-for-2 from the free throw line to make it a one-point game with 55.5 seconds left.
The Warriors had to burn two timeouts because they couldn't get the ball inbounds. Eventually, Bullock brought the ball up the floor but was trapped just past midcourt. His pass was stolen by Cape Henry's Andrew Langston.
Hall, who has signed with the University of Virginia, then drove to the basket and after a hop step banked his shot off the glass to make it 57-56. Bullock got a good look on the other end, but his shot banked off the window and rattled out.
The Warriors trailed for most of the third quarter and were down 40-34 with 1:07 left. But after Will Askew hit a 3-pointer from the right wing, Kecoughtan forced a five-second count near the Cape Henry bench with 18.4 seconds left.
A Dolphin assistant was called for a technical foul. Bullock hit both free throws, and then Greg Alexander drained a 3-pointer from straight on to make put the Warriors ahead 42-40 going into the fourth.
Kecoughtan took its biggest lead on Alexander's third 3-pointer of the second half, which made it 54-47 with 4:18 left in the game. But the Warriors couldn't get a handle on Clarke, the Dolphins' athletic 6-5 wing. Clarke scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.
In the other three games on Friday: Norfolk Collegiate defeated Western Branch 66-56 and Flora MacDonald held off Genesis Academy 38-36.
