Wednesday's local college basketball roundup: Apprentice offense hits high gear

Apprentice School (4-3) scored 69 first-half points on its home floor and hammered Mid-Atlantic Christian of Elizabeth City, N.C., 104-72 Wednesday.

Five Builders reached double figures: reigning U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Division I Player of the Week Tevin Andrews with 16 points, Latrone Demiel, Cameron Perry and Rodney Goodman with 15 each and Tony Walton with 13.

Lavontae Thomas had nine assists and four rebounds.

The Builders hit 50.6 percent from the field (40-of-79), including 11-of-23 from 3-point range, and outrebounded the Mustangs 58-32.

Andrews, a senior rigger apprentice from Pike County, Ala., averaged 25.5 points and 12.5 rebounds in two games for the A’s at the Elizabeth City State Classic last weekend.

Radford 73, Hampton 64

Javonte Green had 22 points, 10 rebounds and six steals to lead the host Highlanders (5-3).
The Pirates fell to 0-6 despite Ke’Ron Brown’s 16 points and fellow freshman Deron Powers’ 13.

VWC 73, Roanoke 67

Menchville High graduate Chris Teasley led host Virginia Wesleyan (4-0), ranked second nationally by d3hoops.com, past Roanoke (4-1) at Batten Center in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener for both.

Teasley led all scorers 23 points, hitting 9-of-12 from the field, including two 3-pointers. His two free throws increased the margin to 72-67.

Jarred Guest had 17 points and 10 rebounds as VCU (4-3) pounded Stetson 92-56 at the Siegel Center. ...

Patricio Garino made a steal with 6 seconds left and hit two clinching free throws as George Washington won 54-53 at James Madison.

Freshman Andre Nation led the Dukes (1-5) with 19 points, five steals and four blocks. He hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that left the final margin at one. ...

Juwan Staten had 18 points to lead seven Mountaineers in double figures as host West Virginia beat VMI 94-69. Stan Okoye had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Keydets, and D.J. Covington had 12 points and seven rebounds. ...

Men’s honors

Air Force Academy senior Mike Lyons, a Woodside High graduate, has climbed to 12th on the Falcons’ all-time scoring chart with 1,128 points.

He leads the Mountain West with 21.8 points per game, netting 29 on 11-of-15 shooting — plus seven rebounds and four assists — in an 86-72 win over Montana State.

He had 20 points, three rebounds, a team-high four assists and a game-high three steals against 23rd-ranked Colorado on Sunday, when the Falcons (5-1) took their first loss, 89-74. ...

Christopher Newport sophomore guard Mike Cherry was selected to the D3hoops.com Team of the Week.

Cherry helped CNU go to 4-0 for first time since 2004. He averaged more than 40 minutes of playing time last week, primarily due to a 54-minute performance in a quadruple-overtime win over Wesley.

He scored 28 points against Wesley and 26 against John Carroll, including the winning shot with 3.5 seconds remaining. Cherry was named the MVP of the CNU/Point Plaza Invitational.

Cherry, the Rookie of the Year last season in the USA South, is averaging 22.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game this season.

Women

Monet Tellier scored 17 points as Virginia Tech earned a 47-38 home victory over Wisconsin in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. It was the second game in a row that the Hokies (3-2) held their opponents to fewer than 40 points. ...

Rachael Bilney netted 12 of her 17 points in the second half and freshman Lauren Tolson scored a season-high 13 to spark Richmond (4-4) past North Carolina A&T 76-63. ...

Chelsea Gray and Virginia Beach’s Elizabeth Williams scored 19 points each as No. 4 Duke won 71-54 at Michigan. ...

Tierra Ruffin-Pratt had 11 points and five steals as No. 22 North Carolina edged No. 15 Ohio State 57-54. ...

Host Cleveland State beat VCU 68-47 despite 18 points and eight rebounds from Shekinah Henry. ...
