The Old Dominion women's superlative start continued Wednesday night as they beat UNLV 85-67 in the first round of the six-team World Vision Classic in Las Vegas.
Jackie Cook scored 23 points in 29 minutes to lead ODU (7-1), while Shae Kelley had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
ODU, in its second season under Newport News native Karen Barefoot's coaching, went on a 10-0 run to grab a 16-7 advantage and never trailed again. The Lady Monarchs led by no fewer than nine points in the second half.
Alana Cesarz had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Rebels (3-7).
The Lady Monarchs will play at 8:30 p.m. Thursday against No. 23 Texas A&M, which won the 2011 NCAA championship.
A&M, 63rd in the NCAA's most recent Rating Percentage Index to ODU's No. 110 position, improved to 7-3 with a victory over Kansas State.
NSU women 60, Chowan 56
Norfolk State’s women ended an eight-game slide Wednesday by gutting out a home victory over Chowan.
Hampton High alumna Talaya Lynch led the Division II Hawks (0-8) with 19 points. Aivah Parham paced NSU with 17, and former Crabber Quineshia Leonard had seven rebounds and three blocks for the Spartans.
NSU led 23-13 in the first half. Chowan rallied and went on a 16-6 run for a 48-39 lead, capped by a Lynch 3-pointer.
But Chowan didn’t score in the final 4:25. Kashay Barnes’ 3-pointer with 3:17 left gave NSU the lead to stay at 57-56, and Recca Trice was 3-of-4 on free throws in the final 10 seconds.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt scored 24 points as No. 17 North Carolina (11-1) beat East Carolina 76-67 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Whitny Edwards led ECU (8-3) with 17 points and her sister Britny had 12. Both are transfers from U.Va. ...

Women’s-men’s doubleheaders featuring Norfolk State at Howard on Jan. 14 and NSU at Hampton on Feb. 18 were announced as part of ESPNU’s coverage of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference basketball.
In each case, the women will play at 4:30 p.m. and the men at 7.
