It was an eventful Tuesday in the Peninsula District with champions being decided in boys and girls soccer, a tie being forced atop the standings in baseball, and a couple of ejections that could factor into what happens the rest of the way.
Though the Kecoughtan boys and Gloucester girls clinched district titles in soccer, the game of the day was on the diamond. With a chance to clinch at least a tie for the championship, Hampton lost to Kecoughtan 5-4 in 10 innings. The Crabbers had the bases loaded with nobody out in the 10th, but the Warriors turned a 6-2-3 double play and got a strikeout to end it.
If there's no separation after Friday, Hampton and Menchville (both 14-3) will go to a one-game playoff Tuesday to decide who gets the automatic spot in the Eastern Region tournament.
The win came at a cost for the Warriors. Center fielder
was ejected after arguing with the home plate umpire, who had called him out on a stolen base attempt. By
rules, Robinson will be suspended for Friday's game.
Also ejected Tuesday was Bethel boys soccer coach
, who was given a red card at halftime for arguing a call. Unless the ruling is overturned, Carel will be unable to coach the Bruins' Thursday game against Hampton.
That's an important game for Bethel, which can claim the No. 3 seed in the district tournament — its highest ever — with a win.
