Maureen Slattery of Newport News went high with her college decision -- a mile high, to be specific.
Slattery, a Hampton Roads Academy senior and two-time Daily Press girls tennis Player of the Year, committed Tuesday to the University of Denver, a Division I team.
She also considered Virginia Tech, Princeton, Brown, the College of Charleston, Rutgers, Penn and Dartmouth. She'll be belting two-handed groundstrokes for the Pioneers next fall.
Slattery, whose older sister Melissa Diskin played for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was the state Group AAA singles runner-up for Warwick as a ninth-grader in the spring of 2010.
She then transferred to HRA and has been unbeaten in singles. Now she's playing No. 1 on the state's top Virginia Independent Schools Division II team.
Based on U.S. Tennis Association play, she is rated as the No. 54 senior in the nation and No. 2 in Virginia. During a 12-and-under tournament in Delray Beach, Fla., in 2008, she beat Taylor Townsend of Georgia, who won the 2012 Australian Open girls championship.
